At Harmony's Root, we utilize a virtual environment. This type of format allows students to receive recordings of their lessons, and have the comfort of learning within their own home. While this does create a challenge for those who do not have a piano at home and may deter some students from taking lessons, we would like to remind those that practice is important. Therefore, without a piano at home, a student will not get as much out of the lessons whether the student is taking lessons virtual or in person. Please feel free to reach out if you are unsure of a good cheap practice piano. We are happy to make recommendations!
Each piano lesson, no matter the skill level, will focus on creating a foundation. Music has many foundations that build on each other. Books will be used and completed throughout lessons while also having a benchmark song to complete. More details about bench mark songs will be shown below. Depending on the student and their skill level, the instructor will determine what book is used and will be recommended for the student to receive before the start of their first lesson. All sheet music outside of books will be provided by the instructor at no cost. Lessons will always focus on the need of the student. This is crucial for a students growth.
Benchmark songs are a skill check for the student. At the end of the first month of lessons, a group of songs will be presented to the student. The student will get to choose a song out of this group and will practice this song along side the book they are learning and any other song they wish to learn. Each group of Benchmark songs will have a tier associated with them. As the student plays in front of their instructor and passes the benchmark song, they will move onto the next tier of songs. It is to be noted that after passing a benchmark tier, there will be a prize associated to this accomplishment. The goal of a Benchmark Song is to show the student that they are growing and can implement their learned skills with any song.
While lessons have not yet started, we encourage you to sign up for the mailing list on the home page so that you can get the latest news and updates on lesson availabilities!
Questions not listed here will be answered before the first day of lessons or within the policy sheet given to the student or parent of student.
Piano Lessons will occur weekly at the time and day that is scheduled.
To become a piano player, it is best to acquire your own piano so that you can practice on your free time and outside of lessons. At Harmony's Root, we believe that practice is one of the key factors to becoming a great musician no matter the instrument. Therefore, we recommend that before signing up for lessons, it would be best to obtain a practice piano. We are happy to point you in the direction of cheap piano options so that you can start your piano journey!
It is recommended that piano learning books are to be acquired by the student. However, all and any sheet music outside of the book will be provided by the instructor. The specific book to get will be informed to the student during the initial call by the instructor. Further questions can be answered before first day of lessons occur.
Due to travel constraints, Harmony's Root will only be virtual at this point in time. Being virtual will not only allow students to have the option of viewing their recorded lessons, but it will allow for anyone in the PST, CST, and EST time zones to take lessons from us!
Harmony's Root will be establishing group lessons in a different format. While we will not have virtual private group lessons, there will be a live virtual lesson that will take place on a streaming platform and will go over different topics that anyone can benefit from! These topics can include, "What style should I use?" or "Learning how to play Clair De Lune - Part 1". Topics will be either by request, or simply if there is a need. More info on this topic to come!
This is one of the greatest questions that you as a student can ask yourself. This question is what sparks a benchmark song. Completing a benchmark song will show you as the student that you are improving. Benchmark songs however are not the only thing that the student can go by to see improvement. Quickly reading and understanding what is on the sheet music in front of you is a clear sign of improvement. Muscle memory will start to develop, and eventually, you will be able to start sight reading music and know what note you are playing just by the tune. Always ask your instructor if they see improvement as well. Do not be afraid to ask.
Benchmark songs will need to be approved by the instructor if a song is requested to be a benchmark song. However, the student is free to request learning any song they would like along side the benchmark song.
Benchmark songs will be implemented within the lesson plans of each student. As mentioned above in the structure of lessons, students will learn from their piano books while also having the benchmark songs to test and push themselves. Students as stated will also have separate songs that they request to learn but will need to pass the benchmark song in order to get to the next tier of benchmark songs.
